The Blackthorn Key
by Kevin Sands
A couple of my students had read this book so I thought it was time to give it a try. One had really liked it, the other not so much. I was hooked from the beginning. I thought it was fascinating how the author chose the 1665 setting, and included what was happening historically at the time. I loved the relationship between the main character Christopher, and his best friend/sidekick Tom Bailey. The plot was interesting enough to keep me turning the pages, and even though it's a "middle grade" book I didn't find it too childish, in fact it addresses some very adult topics. As I read I couldn't help thinking that this was like a kid's version of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. I hope this turns into a series!
