Soul of the Crow
by Jessaca Willis
The world is a dark place. There, I've said it.
As a reader, it always bothered me that fantasy worlds were different. Why shouldn't they have characters who are just as messed up as the rest of us? Why would they be built on sunshine and rainbows with little to no consequences for anything. At least, those were the fantasy books I grew up reading, the ones that made me feel even more isolated than I already was.
If you're new to my writing, let me say this upfront: I write dark fantasy. Maybe not as dark as some, and maybe not in the ways that are typical for the genre, but my characters are put through the ringer, my worlds unfair.
Soul of the Crow explores a lot of darkness: grief, trauma, deception, discrimination. If you're looking for a series that will help you forget how broken our own world is, then my books aren't them.
However, if you're looking for characters that you can relate to, ones who have endured as much strife as you, ones who have hardened themselves to the cruelties of the world and still—beyond all odds—have it in themselves to care, then I promise you won't be disappointed.
Sinisa is a dark, sarcastic Reaper who knows her place in the world. She's not ashamed of getting her elbows dirty or of being surrounded by death, but she's also never known anything different.
Acari was raised to believe that his brother would take the throne, until his untimely death. Now, in the midst of his grief, he's having to rethink what his future will look like as King of Oakfall. But he's never prepared for something like this. He's never been allowed to. His father is ashamed of his speech impediment, and he isn't the only child he's ashamed of.
His sister, Gem, is different too. Born with a cleft lip, the laws of the land state that she has been marked by death and should've been killed years ago. And yet, she's survived.
The Reapers of Veltuur series is a story of self-discovery, overcoming impossible odds, facing one's fears, and, of course dark magicks and epic adventures.
It's a series that may not be for everyone, but for those of you with a little darkness in your soul, you will feel right at home on these pages.
