The Kamogawa Detectives is a short story collection. Nagare and Koishi, an adorable father and daughter duo of detectives. Every chapter follows a customer who requests a meal they once had years ago. If you enjoy cozy, low-stakes literature I’d recommend it.

I'd only recommend it if you enjoy those things. It didn’t bother me as much as it may others, but it may read as repetitive to others. There is little conflict in finding these recipes for the most part. I do wish it went beyond the formula, slightly. I think it went that way towards the end.

The last chapter raised my ranking. Nagare and Koishi got good development in my chapter. My favorite would still be the fifth chapter and the elder lady chapter. That was because of I liking the customers a lot.

My wishes for the next book would be more development towards the main characters. Also more details about the process of finding the recipe. It always flashes from the interview to the return. The translation was just alright, it felt off sometimes but translation can be difficult and I haven’t read many translated novels.

Overall, a cozy time. The themes of nostalgia and grief were great. Your feelings for foods can be impacted by what was happening before, during, and after you ate it. I'm not in any rush but I want to read the remaining books.
