This really is a sweet little YA pirate story with a dash of romance. Mar is the nonbinary main character (NMC) who is, as is typical for a YA book, dealing with A LOT- grappling with lost parents, learning to master their own magic, and, oh, navigating a bargain with a devil to boot.

The characters Bas and Dami are super fun. 

The little touches of romance were very sweet. I give it one pepper for the sweet swooniness. 🌶️

With multiple nonbinary latine characters this book has lots of diverse representation. From an outsider’s perspective, I thought the nonbinary gender representation was done really well. 

Overall this was a really fun read and I definitely recommend. It has action, adventure, romance. I will read the next interconnected book and am also excited to read the author’s Pride and Prejudice retelling.
