A delightful young adult fantasy. There’s a magical school and the chosen one, but it doesn’t feel stale. This is enemies to lovers romance with great friendship and interesting magical mystery with plenty of foreshadowing.

Simon is being quite obvious with his obsession on his roommate “nemesis”. We don’t really meet Baz on the first fourth of the book (or thereabouts) but he’s definitely still present. (Simon actually had to make a deal with his friend that he’s not allowed to talk about Baz, and I’m laughing my ass off about it.)

It’s a lenghty book, but it doesn’t feel that long. While the reader might not be exactly surprised, it’s a very entertaining journey from start to finish. The writing is funny, things keep happening in a good pace, and there are no big lore dumps.

I had to stay up most of the night to finish this, just couldn’t put it down. I’ll be sure to read the sequels, even though this novel stands alone. The cover is so cool too, I was already a bit in love with Baz just from the picture.

I wonder how long he’s wanted this.
I wonder how long I’ve wanted it.
I’d say that I didn’t—that the possibility just now occurred to me for the first time. But if that’s true, then why is there a list in my head of all the things I’ve always wanted to do to Baz.
