The Cinderella Deal by Jennifer Crusie

A re-read for me, I wanted to see if this was as charming as I remembered. Perhaps I was predisposed to liking this, but it held up for me.

A riff on the Housesitter movie plot, this book has a predictability unreal premise with a couple having to pretend to be together for work reasons. But as they spend time together they realise they are meant for each other. We have our zany, hippy heroine and uptight professor hero as leads who could be completely home in a 90s rom-com.

And despite this predictability I found the book charming. It doesn't try to twist the tropes but rests on a solid foundation of humour and a plot that keeps ticking along. The H/h are lovely people who I would have liked to be friends with. The hero is a little less developed but I believed he was a good guy. I didn’t really buy that he was smoking hot but I liked that Daisy thought he was God’s gift. She, for me, was the better developed character with an arc, finding balance with her original artistic zaniness and taking on more adult responsibility. She has a strong friendship with a side character, Julia, where they talk about more than men.

4 stars overall for making me smile and passing the Bechdel test.
