It was interesting starting this series after having read most of Mercy Thompson considering it runs pretty much parallel to that series. It took me a second to reorient myself back to the beginning of everything that was going on in this world back when Bran and her brothers were more involved in Mercy's life, before certain reveals happened. But once I got my head around where we were in the overall story I was in on this one. Anna and Charles have just discovered each other as mates, but Anna's past makes trust incredibly difficult and Charles' injuries have his wolf on a hair trigger. But werewolf attacks in their territory have Charles dad unable to do anything except send him out to try to deal with it all, injuries or no. Anna's omega abilities could just be the edge he needs though and going off into the wilderness together might actually give them a chance to get to know each other better, to build the trust they need for their human sides even if their wolves have already decided.
It didn't take much for me to be sucked into this story. Anna's been traumatized with how her old alpha treated her and there's so much that she just doesn't know about being a werewolf or her omega nature. But, trusting her wolf does still feel right, especially when it comes to how she feels about Charles. Charles has no doubts about his connection with Anna, but the circumstances they find themselves in with this rogue wolf has him nervous for her safety, even as he wants her with him.
There's plenty of tension and action in this one as Charles and Anna find themselves in a circumstance they weren't expecting dealing with more than just a rogue werewolf. But the trouble does help bring Charles and Anna closer together. I look forward to seeing where their story goes. I might just have to reread a few Mercy Thompson novels as I go as well. :)
