Miss Julie by August Strindberg
4.0

This is an extraordinarily sexual play for its time. I can see why it got banned. Shocking. The emotions are rather heightened (“I love you, I hate you, I love you, I hate you”), and the combined underlying misogyny and misandry are no better than (& similar to) Look Back In Anger, but for the nineteenth century, the open display of female sexual desire, examination of class and patriarchy and thoroughly realistic kitchen set and real time are extraordinary. It’s got to be the first Kitchen Sink drama. While we’ve rather moved on from them now, they were an essential component in the development of theatre when they happened in the mid twentieth century, so the fact that Strindberg wrote this in the 1880s is ground-breaking indeed!
