When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn

3.5

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5)
Steam Level: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (very descriptive open door scenes)

Michael Stirling has been in love with Francesca Bridgerton ever since he met her. The only problem? She's married to his cousin. When tragedy strikes and Francesca is able to wed again, both she and Michael struggle with the idea of her moving on from her first husband. Now is the time for Michael to act and reveal his feelings. But will Francesca be able to see him as more than a friend?

I had to satisfy my curiosity and give this book a try after all the controversy surrounding the show and Francesca's story. I will say that my heart broke for Francesca in the beginning, and I really enjoyed how the first 60% of the story focused on the main characters' grief and conflicted feelings. This was easily a 4 star read up until that point. What brought my rating down was how Michael essentially used seduction to convince Francesca to marry him. It felt a bit coerced to me. Fans of steamy romances will surely enjoy the wickedness (pun intended) that both characters engage in, but I wanted more wooing and courting. I did love the ending, as well as the letter excerpts sprinkled throughout, but I hoped for a bit more based on the hype I've seen expressed for this story.
