Greenwood by Michael Christie
5.0

In 2034, the Withering has taken hold of the world, killing off species after species of plants. Similar to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, the climate has shifted and nothing will grow.
Greenwood Island, off the west coast of Canada, is the one place where the trees have remained untouched by the deadly fungus but it has become an exclusive eco-resort, accessible only to celebrities and the uber-wealthy.

Jacinda, a tour guide for Greenwood's old growth forest, uses her extensive education of conifer forests to entertain these guests, tolerating their endless selfies and their dreaded 3 star reviews. When she is approached by an esteemed lawyer and questioned about the connection between her last name and the name of the island, Jacinda starts reflecting on the little she knows of her ancestry and wondering if she is connected to the island in deeper ways.

Jumping backwards in time in ~30 year segments, Jacinda's forbearers each tell their part of the story. Each has a connection to this island haven and to the infamous Greenwood name. The reader rolls through the generations like counting the rings on a tree and then moves back up through time to the dystopian present.

No matter how the pieces fit together, Christie shows us that family isn't about bloodlines. Instead family is about the determination to be connected to those we love.
