There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom by Louis Sachar

5.0

The book tells the story about a bully named Bradley who goes through the process of growth. At the time of first reading this book I was a lot like Bradley myself. I was one of those kids who'd constantly be getting into trouble, who was mean to people because imagine letting someone in. Even for years after reading this book for the first time I was still a person filled with negativity. Bradley is a person you'd resent if you met him in person but this book shows how people are deeper that a cold interior. Most of the story is about Bradley and the school counselor Clara who's one of the first people to show Bradley kindness and all of their interactions we're nice to read because with each meeting they had Bradleys character grew.

It's so well written for a childrens book even back then I understood it. The message is there clearly: you are more than what people paint you, there are people out there who will love you and teach you more kindness than you thought you'd deserve. The book builds up on the journey of starting to love yourself and showing more kindness to others. I think that journey for myself has only started the end of last year when I met people who didn't judge me by my cover. People who sat and spoke to me people who asked "are you ok? Would you like to talk" questions I was never asked for years. I think people like me and Bradley have a lot of self hate. Whether that's becaue we still act horrible now or we did back then.

This theme of self growing is so well explored in this book even though it's a quick read you learn a lot from it. I think the author wrote Bradley very well and and he's a really enjoyable character throught the book.

This journey doesn't just start with you most never do. It starts with other too. Others who are willing to to spend time with you. Please fight for those people and try to show them kindness because they are the best kind of people :)
