Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty

5.0

I loved this book! It was so creative and lighthearted. Serafina and the Black Cloak was amazing! Serafina has always been different. She lives in the basement of the Biltmore Estate with her Pa, unbeknownst to the Vanderbilt's. Serafina is the Chief Rat Catcher, and sneaks around the estate at night catching vermin. When she sees a man in a black cloak sneaking around the halls with a little girl who disappears before her very eyes, Serafina is sucked into a mystery that she's determined to solve.

I loved the writing and the way that the author was able to capture the southern accent as well as the way members of high society acted. It also captured the mysticism that the south does so well (cattamounts, for example).

I loved the characters, especially Serafina and Braedan. Their friendship was so pure and sweet, and their personalities really complemented each other very well.
While this was definitely a middle-grade novel, I found it to be really entertaining, even though I was not the intended audience.
