20th Century Day Of The Triffids
by John Wyndham
Not impressed by the cliché-sounding blurb on the back, I'm still very glad I read this book. The only real science fiction I've read so far is Tiptree, and I was pleasantly surprised that this story was as thought out and interesting, but much easier to read. I had my concerns about the course of the book when the main character saved a beautiful blonde woman early on, and although there are some *traditional* views about women and men in this book, I was pleasantly surprised with the main female character and I'd like to think that it was not just my imagination that made her great and three-dimensional! Definitely recommend this one, especially if you need a gateway story into the science fiction realm.
