Chocolate City: A History of Race and Democracy in the Nation's Capital
by Chris Myers Asch, George Derek Musgrove
Didn’t think anything could inflate my already huge sense of DC pride, but somehow this did. I wish everyone in DC would read this amazing book, which gave me a much greater appreciate for the history of my hometown.
It was incredibly comprehensive without feeling like a textbook and fair without seeming neutral on the more negative parts of the past. My only complaint is that I would I have liked to learn more about more recent history (the 80s and 90s in particular) but I know it’s difficult to include everything when you trying to cover 400 years of history.
A fantastic read for anyone who loves Chocolate City—and probably for those who don’t too.
