Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield

2.75

I really wanted this text to be more than it was. The marketing was entirely misleading, which is not the fault of the author, but probably led me to enjoy this novel's experience much less. I think the characters are defined and believable as people, but I found the lack of substantiated background was the key to the failure of the ultimate promise. This novel doesn't have any real foundation, and it often felt like the author was writing around the premise, rather than delivering a story which could serve to be anything other than a vague folk-tale. I found the tone and voice to be notably young, and notably modern, which aren't always a bad thing, but come across in incredibly poor execution in this instance.
