This book is beautifully written and narrated. It is about the Weywards, a family of women across three time periods (1610s, 1940s, and present day), their connection to nature and healing/magic, and the power of their independence. I enjoyed learning about Altha, Violet, and Kate’s lives and feeling the strong pull of familial history and magic.
It is also about the violence and abuse of men (particularly sexual violence) and as a result is deeply sad and discusses difficult topics, including rape and physical and emotional abuse. Be aware of trigger warnings.
Though deeply sad and difficult to read about Grace (Altha’s childhood friend), Violet, and Kate’s experiences with sexual assault and violence, it was encouraging to see their resilience and the hope they found in surrounding themselves with nature and freeing themselves from men. This book discusses important topics, including the power men had as heads of families and in the military and medical positions, medical malpractice, abortions, stillbirths, and pregnancy, fear of nature and women’s power, rage, and more. I would recommend this book, but be prepared for a darker read discussing difficult but highly relevant subjects.
It is also about the violence and abuse of men (particularly sexual violence) and as a result is deeply sad and discusses difficult topics, including rape and physical and emotional abuse. Be aware of trigger warnings.
