Fanfare by Renée Ahdieh

2.0

As a Renée Ahdieh devotee, I was very interested to read her official debut, Fanfare, and thanks to Interlibrary Loan, I was able to do so. As a whole, Fanfare was fun and I could see the beginning of Ahdieh’s brilliance, including her ability to weave together an intriguing plot while utilizing beautiful language.

But while Tom and Cris were likeable characters, I found that at times they fell flat. Cris’s motivations were often a bit unclear, particularly when it came to the section of the plot surrounding her ex. At times, I also felt like I wanted some more meat to the story. The stakes at points didn’t feel completely believable and I must admit I rolled my eyes a few times.

However, if you’re looking for a quick romantic read, the novel does have a happily ever after ending that is satisfactory.
