A Rising Man
by Abir Mukherjee
Colonial India in 1919 is the best place to hide, at least that's what Captain Sam Wyndham thought when he left England to join the Indian Police as a detective. His first case is the murder of a high-ranking civil servant, which throws up more than he bargained for.
What a fantastic book! Great story, lots of twists and turns like a detective novel should have. The backdrop of post-war India was fascinating, I loved the descriptions of the opulent white side of Calcutta contrasting with the political dissent rumbling under the surface.
Really good characters too, Sam is complex, moody and just the right side of sarcastic to lighten the mood of what must have been such a difficult job. Sergeant Banerjee, his Indian colleague offers a different view of the British Raj, but finding his white superiors lacking.
I can't wait for the next book in this series, I found myself wanting to know more about Captain Wyndham as he settles into his new life.
