this is the beautiful historical fiction that introduced me to robert smalls. i cannot believe i had never heard of smalls before reading this book, as his legacy should be vital to our american history. while i find the relationship between the mckees and smalls/polites to likely be a little more romantic than realistic, i loved learning about robert and his bravery. the author also paint a beautiful picture of the south carolina landscape, which made me long for a place i’ve never been. PS: don’t skip the author’s note!
