This book offers a fascinating exploration of migration and cultural identity. What stood out most was the Swee Hua’s unwavering desire to return home, even after years in a new country. It’s rare to see this perspective in literature, where assimilation is often the expected narrative. Equally compelling were the Lily and her father who seemed to want to reject their heritage, striving to fully embrace the culture of the Canada insread.
While the novel delves deeply into themes of belonging and cultural conflict, I didn’t connect as much with its focus on the struggles of motherhood. That aspect kept it from being a perfect read for me, but the rich exploration of identity and home still made it a standout.
