Inherent Vice by Thomas Pynchon
4.0

A funny and 'fun' read! Much more than Vineland or COL49 though not necessarily better (maybe Vineland is my favourite of the three still?). Also much better than the film.

I loved the section set in Las Vegas but really the whole book was a great ride. Speaking of rides, the freeway is almost a character in this book and acts like a superconductor or FTL jumpdrive. The characters (and names of course) are wacky. Everyone is stoned, except Bigfoot, who secretly has beliefs as crazy as the hippies he despises. Behind this, like one of the final chapters, is commentary on profiteering of housing. Surprisingly there is some more hardboiled (probably wrong word) type stuff here with shootouts (I was shocked when Doc revealed himself as a proper P.I. carrying weapons). The Lemuria stuff with Sortilege was intriguing. I wasn't too interested in all the sex stuff (Doc comes off creepy, predatory; though often funny it does raise questions). I wonder if Pynchon saw Pineapple Express before he finished this book???

Next Pynchon for me before Shadow Ticket will be Bleeding Edge.
