Preposterous plot, meta novel within a novel structure with sci-fi twists. Honestly, I read this to get a healthy depiction of a childfree life, sorely lacking in fiction. Not entirely satisfactory from that aspect since the two sisters were more the focus rather than the stranger mother. The characters are all flawed in their own way, struggling with trauma and issues such as abandonment by birth parent, sexual coercion by foster parent, social anxiety due to insecure childhood, alcoholism, drug use, mental health disorders. The sisters are obviously loved by the author and they manage to launch a resistance against what is holding them down. The particular challenges that Black women/girls face such as judgements about their hair and being a Black female author are striking.
