The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell
4.0

Don’t get me wrong…I loved this book. It was an emotionally epic page-turner and an excellent example of literary historical fiction written in O’Farrell’s classically beautiful prose. Yes, I loved it. Buuuuut, you do have to suspend your desire for historical accuracy in order to love it like I did. Of course, like in all historical fiction, O’Farrell altered many details of Lucrezia’s life to maintain narrative continuity; however, some of these embellishments were extreme. I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll just say to do your research and you’ll know what I mean. If this doesn’t bother you, or if you simply ignore the fact that Lucrezia was a real historical figure and instead appreciate The Marriage Portrait as literary fiction, then you will probably give this read a 4.5 ⭐️ too.
