Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

5.0

Finished in one quiet, entranced sitting! I didn't think I would enjoy the world of Jack and Jill; the gloomy, dangerous moor and the village protected by a vampire. I assumed it would be dreary and gothic - ie. Not my cup of tea. But honestly, the storytelling in this second novel was even better then the first; the tone was enticing and also consistent (which I found the first book to be slightly lacking) and the story about these two identical, yet terribly different girls was so captivating. Jill reminded me of haunting characters in Wuthering Heights, while Jack was so new and refreshing.

As a prequel, it was gorgeously thought-out and explains so much about these two characters, their motivations and their passions. I am glad this book came after the original story about the school, because like the children, having now glimpsed the fantastical worlds they venture to, who would want to go back to simply a school for wayward children?
