aelynreads 's review for:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
by Jeff Kinney
The kids love this series and I have to make sure the library has multiple copies of each book, so I thought I'd better read it to see what all the fuss is about. I understand why this series is so loved, particularly by boys - it's hilarious and silly and the narrative voice is strikingly real and honest.
I've seen many negative reviews criticising these books saying they're inappropriate for children. Yes, they are rude at times and the main character is not a model student, but there is no profanity and it's not vulgar. If parents and teachers are going to censor their child's reading material because it "sets a bad example", children won't be allowed to read anything at all. All books have villains and even heroes/main characters that make questionable decisions and have "inappropriate" morals.
In my experience, books that feature less-than-perfect main characters (like this series and Horrid Henry for example) are LOVED by boys. If you're that concerned about the lessons your child may be learning from these books, open a dialogue with them about it. Ask them what they think of Jeff's behaviour in this book - don't ban them from reading it altogether and risk dampening their enjoyment of reading. Yes, there are some books that are genuinely inappropriate for young children, but this is not one of them in my opinion.
