This is a brilliant book. Along the lines of Allende’s The House of the Spirits, Kurniawan uses a family saga to examine Indonesia’s politics and the complex dynamics of humans who are selfish but crave love. The interwoven Indonesian legends elevate this to one of the most remarkable magical realism novels I have read to date.
