Among the Living
by Jordan Castillo Price
While I do see the potential in this opener to the PsyCop series, this novella has some glaring issues I couldn't ignore. First, the writing can be a bit choppy in some places, with a few typos here and there, though I tend to ignore those. However, the pacing also isn't the smoothest. I wish Price would explain certain scenes or characters' thoughts/ actions in more detail--I mean just read the first chapter, amirite? I also really wanted the story to focus more on the investigative side since I thought Victor's abilities would lead to some really cool detective work, but all that really happens is that he waits around to see if he can talk to dead people--not a lot of finesse.
Still... something about the snarky humor and socially awkward main character with his dark and wounded past just hits the right and perfect spot for me to keep reading. What can I say, I'm highly susceptible to these traits. Overall, I enjoyed the story, flaws and all.
