This book was so gritty and such a good read with heavy and important themes.
My Summary: Ike and Buddy Lee have nothing in common but difficult, criminal pasts and love for their deceased sons. When their sons married each other, Buddy Lee and Ike weren't very supportive, but after their sons were murdered in cold blood, the two have come together to seek justice for their boys. In order to do so, they have to understand their sons in a way they never have before, and maybe even find compassion for how difficult it was to be gay in the South. It will take everything these two men have to figure out what happened to their boys, but the journey might be just as important as the discovery of the truth.
My Thoughts: Razorblade Tears is a story of regret and vengeance. Ike and Buddy Lee, the fathers of two murdered gay men, who did not have good relationships with their sons when they were alive, come together to avenge their children. This novel tackles many heavy themes such as prejudices, homophobia and transphobia, crime, racism, murder, and the rift between fathers and their gay sons.
Even though Ike and Buddy Lee had tumultuous relationships with their sons in life, they're still fathers who would do anything for their sons, and that is what is at the heart of this story. Both Ike and Buddy Lee have plenty of regrets about how they didn't love their sons well when they were alive, but through this quest for vengeance, both men come to terms with what they did and decide to move forward with more love for their family members and empathy for people who are different than they are.
The bottom line is that Razorblade Tears offers a powerful narrative with dynamic characters. It's one I highly recommend for people looking for a deeply moving story.
