What a sweet little love story. Felix and Joy are teenage kindreds that have been matched since birth but separated by class, royalty, space and politics. As kindreds they share everything - thoughts, emotions, feelings etc and can communicate telepathically. When their world as they know it disintegrates, they run away and end up hiding on earth.
I liked several things about this - love the own voices element and celebration of black beauty and curvy bodies. I love the character development of both Joy and Felix as they come into their own - discovering their individual strengths and how they make each other better.
The political drama is interesting if a little simplistic. The world building is also interesting but I found it very convenient that the aliens and humans are so similar in several regards. That being said, considering this is YA, I’ll give it a pass. It’s a mix of slow and fast paced as the plot progresses. All in - I quite enjoyed reading this and would recommend it for a younger audience (13/14 year olds) getting into sci-fi.
