Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

5.0

This is the last installment in The Hunger Games trilogy. I was very excited to re-read this book as when I first read it I missed some vital parts (however I was relieved to know that I wasn’t the only one). The novel starts a little after where we left off in Catching Fire. It doesn’t take long to get thrown back into the story and find out what this novel is all about: the uprising. Will Katniss lead the rebellion as the Mockingjay or would she just stand by and let it happen? All your favourite characters return for this last book and you do see more of them in some cases (such as Finnick), however one particular favourite character doesn’t make a reappearance until later on in the novel with some surprising changes.

The whole novel, like the rest of the series, is full of twists and heartbreak. A part of me wanted to put off re-reading it because of some events that happen, however I’m so pleased I did because sometimes you remember the sad moments but completely forget the humorous ones. Even thought there aren’t many funny moments it’s still enough to give you hope and to keep you going. Don’t get me wrong, the whole story isn’t depressing and there isn’t strictly a sad ending… It’s complicated and depending on how you felt about the first two stories will depend on how you read this book.

Any loose ends you feel there may have been in Catching Fire are brought up in Mockingjay and are answered. However, the only problem I had with the book was the ending felt a little rushed. Like I mentioned before I missed a few bits the first time I read it, when reading it again this time I did still miss a couple of them but I instantly realised when I did. Collins chose to be quite subtle in telling the reader what happened but I’m not sure if that was the right way to go because they were quite important pieces that you couldn’t really afford to miss. I would have just liked it if the book was a bit longer so it could explain more of the events in more detail.

I would love to say so much more about the book but I don’t want to spoil it to anyone who hasn’t read it yet. If you liked the first two books then you will enjoy to see what it has all built up to. This gripping series comes to a close in this book and once you finish reading it you seem to be at a loss, not knowing what to do next. And that’s how I feel now, I can’t think of any other books to read other than this series as I don’t know if anything will be as good. I would recommend this entire series to everyone! There’s something for every type of reader in these books.
