The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
5.0

I've read countless books that once finished, I question why they were written at all because there is no need for them to exist. The Hate U Give is not one of these books, and I wish I would have read it when it was first released. Not only was it beautifully and lyrically written, but the message is vital to people around the globe. After finishing this book and seeing it was released almost four years ago made me realize how naive I am about the presence and prevalence of racism in America. Police brutality and unjust murders have been happening for years. It's nauseating, and I think reading a perspective different than my own was necessary for my understanding of how large this issue it. Although of course I was aware of white privilege, I don't think I fully understood it until I finished reading this book. I've never had to fear for my life for doing absolutely nothing wrong. I've never been pulled over by a police officer or asked if I'm part of a gang or a drug dealer just because of the color of my skin. If I were shot by the police, the officer who shot me would be indicted and sent to prison. I've never been taught to fear or be weary of police officers because I know they wouldn't hurt me. For millions of people, this isn't the case. Reading this book made me want to do something to help and to make a change.

Starr is far from perfect and fearless, which made me like her even more, but she is still resilient, brave, and strong. She is real. I also really loved the family dynamic, and I think the lack of perfection made it far more relevant for me. Sure, the family has had their fair share of difficulties, but they still love and protect each other to no end-- even those who aren't biologically related. Even though there are numerous heavy topics discussed in-depth, there's a good balance between intense conversations and heartwarming and humorous moments. Everyone needs to read this. End of story.
