The Valley of Fear
by Arthur Conan Doyle
While overall the mystery here was a good one with several twists and turns, there were a few things that prevented me from getting into it as much as I would have liked. The break in narrative, for example, I feel could have been handled differently. As interesting as the West Virginia backstory was, I missed Holmes and Watson's presence. Also, since this book was published after but set before "The Final Problem," I can understand the desire of the author to include Moriarty in some way, but having Watson learn all about him here and then be clueless at the beginning of "The Final Problem" doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
