This Mortal Coil
by Emily Suvada
Well this is awkward. The first time I read this novel in 2018, I gave it 5 stars. I never read the sequels but decided I wanted to give them a try, yet I couldn't remember much from this book.
But as I started reading again, i began to remember some of the plot twists, so everything felt too cliche, and not in a fun or interesting way. I didn't enjoy Catarina as a character as much, the world building required too much suspension disbelief, and I didn't buy into the romance at all.
I did end up remembering THE major plot twist from my first read through, which might be why I rated this book so highly back then. I didn't see it coming, and at the time, it seemed super clever. This time around, it felt icky and kind of cheap.
I think I'll still try to read the second book just to see what happens, but I'm so sad I didn't enjoy this the second time. :(
