5.0

Gyasi somehow manages to demonstrate the many generational impacts of slavery, including how much family history was stolen, in a relatively short book (300 pages). Many of the chapters’ events occur at pivotal historical moments and Gyasi conveys how these events and the sociopolitical environment impacted each character and their children. I really can’t stress enough how incredible the scope of this book is, coupled with the impactfulness of the author’s writing. My only complaint was at some points, I wanted to know much more about each of the characters, but that would not have been consistent with the structure of the book.

4.75 stars — not sure about the ending, the rest was just incredible.
