Northranger by Rey Terciero

3.0

Engaging and readable, I was interested to see where Cade’s story would go. This was a mostly positive story of a young gay teen whose family is having some money issues. So both he and his stepdad take a summer job on this ranch.

There’s lots of horror movies, a love interest, and several mysteries swirling around this ranch-owning family. A very loose connection to Northanger Abbey, and a very real grounding in the fear and isolation of a gay teen in the rural Texas 1990s make for some tense moments.

There is homophobia both casual and overt, a reference to a past suicide attempt, a good amount of ambient racism, and just general teen angst.
