Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski

2.0

This is the beginning of "The Witcher Saga", which is the sort of long-form version of a world/character(s) who had previously been a part of many short stories. I'm not a fan of short stories, myself - I want my books long and epic. This is long(ish), but it's definitely written by a short story writer. Each chapter feels like a story on its own. Sometimes the next one doesn't feel related. They wrap up pretty nicely, and I never felt compelled to move to the next chapter right away.

It's not uncommon in epic fantasy to jump between plot lines, but you're typically left on the edge of your seat about something... not so here. It still felt like short stories. I'm sure they're good ones - it's a wildly popular brand now (TV, video games, and more) - I'm not a judge of short stories. I just don't like them. So take this rating with a very large helping of salt - I provide these ratings mostly for myself. If I want to pick up The Witcher later in life, I want this review to go back and remind me that it wasn't for me at this time, for this reason.
