Shadowland by Meg Cabot

This series was one of my favorites as a teenager, and I wanted to reread them to see how I feel about them now. I was very pleasantly surprised, I still love these books nearly as much as I did years ago.

The story is amazing, it’s light and fun and looking at it now I can see how each book has a monster of the week vibe, and I think it’s fun to discover how Suze is going to deal with the ghosts. The characters are another amazing aspect. I had completely forgotten about Father Dom, and was shocked by how awesome he was. I love the family dynamic, and how the family is represented. They aren’t the evil stepfather and stepbrothers that you might expect, and it’s great to see such a strong family, and watch how Suze grows to care about them as time passes. The only parts that I think could bring a bit more to this story would be if her friends were a bit more developed, because they’re interesting, but not in the story too much, so we don’t get a chance to really know them. Another downside is that looking at Suze now, she’s a bit annoying. I think the first time I read these books I loved Suze and thought she was the coolest thing ever, but now looking at her she’s a little immature and self centered. How she reacts in certain situations is a little ridiculous, but even though I find it a little annoying, I know it wouldn’t be the same story without Suze being who she is.

Overall, I love this book, and I can’t wait to reread the rest.
