Do Your Worst by Rosie Danan
4.0

This was a great spooky time read! Set in Scotland, Riley is here to help break a curse on an old castle. On her first night in town, she has dinner and drinks with a stranger in the local bar who she is instantly attracted to. What she doesn’t know is that stranger is Clark, an archeologist working to survey the castle. Clark could not believe in curses or the supernatural any less even if he tried. After Clark tries to get Riley fired, they are forced to share time and space together as Clark surveys and Riley tries to unravel this curse.

I loved reading the Roommate by Rosie Danan so I was excited to come across this book! I enjoyed my time with these characters and this story. Clark was kind of a terrible person and asshole to Riley. Like yeah this is supposed to be enemies to lovers but he was just terrible. After some of the things he does or says, Riley should have just told him to fuck off and move on curse breaking. I think Clark redeems himself by being an actual caring person and he has special moments with Riley throughout the book that help his character. I think their relationship kinda feels rushed but I also think these two characters understand each other to their cores. If I remember correctly, this book takes place over a month? So yeah, super fast timeline. But I think Riley and Clark have shown each other their worst selves because of their situation. Like, Riley spends so much of the book trying to get Clark to leave and Clark is trying to prove that Riley is a phony scammer. They do and say terrible things to each other that really digs at their deepest insecurities and you can’t really do that without knowing the person you are trying to hurt at their deepest level.

I want to talk about the curse and figuring out how to break the curse. I loved seeing Riley work her magic in researching and interviewing to figure out what was going on. The thing that annoyed me was that there was so much that was getting to the point of being obvious but Riley and Clark were too damn dense to see it. Like duuuhhhh!!! When they can’t figure out why the people who started the curse acted the way they did or when Riley has to call her mom to figure out romance book tropes.. Y’all are just dumb. And this like so many other reasons just shows how Riley and Clark, the idiots that they are, were made for each other.
