bu3asalli 's review for:
Darkly Dreaming Dexter
by Jeff Lindsay
I liked the series better to be honest. There was just a lot of description and inner monologues I didn't care for.
SPOILERS
Everybody in the book was mind numbingly stupid, while in the series everyone had something going for them.
The weird connection that Dexter had to his brother's mind was just ridiculous, I could've bought it if it was handled in a better way. However it wasn't.
I prefer the storyline in the series where Dexter's brother fills a room with blood to remind Dexter of what had happened to them when they were young. It seems obvious that Dexter needed a traumatic experience to invoke such a long distanced memory, the book didn't have that storyline.
A lot of the storylines in the series are way better.
I also prefer Dexter in the series, he KNEW he was pretending to be an ordinary human being while the Dexter from the book THOUGHT he was pretending. I was intrigued to find out how he realizes that his actions are very human in deed but the book didn't explore that part, not in the first book at least (that I am aware of).
And by the way where is the conclusion that most books have. What exactly happened after the cops got to the storage box. What did he tell them about how he figured out where Deb was. Are we suppose to guess that, I often hate that part of books where they explain things I already could've guessed but in this one it felt like it was written very lazily.
BTW the technical mistakes were absolutely unacceptable, believe me I watched the sixth season of Dexter and even though it had disappointing mistakes but not as annoying as the mistakes in the book. In the book, I was thinking did he ever sleep? Did he even bother to show up at work?
I also liked his relationship with Deb, in the book she outright used him to advance in her career.
Everyone was just so annoying, instead of the dirty-mouth Deb with clever, humorous lines, we have a Deb that overuses "goddamn it". We have a Laguerta that is just beyond dumb, an Angel that is highly unnecessary and I couldn't believe it but I actually missed the Masuka from the series, who I have always hated in the series.
Even the sixth season which was bad, I still liked better than the book. I never thought I would ever prefer an adaptation to the book. I'm not the least bit intrigued by the second book, even given I have a compulsive habit to finish a book series once I start it (believe me I've read 5 princess diary books before I stopped to look at what I had done).
