The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
4.0

2021 Edit: I reread this because it’s one of my favourite books, and it is the most horribly inaccurate, unfair portrayal of almost everyone involved, and I absolutely worship it.

Listen, I know, I get all the criticisms and I understand. I’m happy to concede many points to historical inaccuracy and twisted characterisation, but to be perfectly honest, I had major fun with this book. I read it all in two days (I’m sick atm and so I get to do nothing but read, hurray) and I could not put it down.

I love the time period so I was probably captured far more than the average reader would be, but I loved all the little court tricks and ruses the three Boleyns put on, it was both fascinating and incredibly depressing to witness. They are three entirely sympathetic characters (in my opinion) who are not saints nor full blooded tyrants, but people, who yearn and want for things the court does not allow them. I did cry, because of course I did, but I throughly appreciated the reprieve from the constant vipers’ nest in William Stafford. I adore that they really did marry for love and lived a long and happy life together, good for Mary and good for him!

I will be checking out more of Philippa’s books; I quite liked the sharp style she has (apart from the constant “he said” “she said” which grated a bit) and I can never get enough of medieval historical fiction. Overall, an entertaining read. I might have to rewatch the film and compare the two.
