ameenahlauren 's review for:
When We Were Birds
by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo
mysterious
tense
medium-paced
I regret waiting to read this book for so long. It was an easy read in the sense that I looked forward to any moment I’d be able to keep reading because the story enthralled me.
It was well-crafted and written with so much intention that I feel it deserves another read. I enjoyed the parallel perspectives that built into their merging, and how their dynamic evolved so organically.
It was tense but it was beautiful, and I admired how Emmanuel stayed true to his character despite his situation. And how Yejide confronted her resentment and unease by attuning to her own momentum.
Emmanuel’s reconciliation with his past and who he had become, and Yejide coming to resolve the worries of the dead and her living circle led to a fulfilling ending.
I would definitely love a sequel but their closure was satisfying as is, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
