Dubliners by James Joyce

Dubliners
1 Star: Dated language
(Dialogue is a bit confusing in spots, even with an audiobook.)
Many sources recommend this as an appetizer for Ulysses. It can be difficult to connect with short story characters. Joyce's talent vividly realizes Irish folk in the brisk atmosphere of Dublin. These vignettes come together to offer a panoramic vision of their interior and exterior lives. By the end, they felt like familiar strangers. It takes time to adjust to Joyce's tone, so I reread the first few tales once or twice. I ultimately prefer A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, but Dubliners episodic structure is more accessible. I feel more prepared to dive into Ulysses, after exploring Joyce's literary likeness of Dublin. Cheers!
