“Anyone can betray anyone.” — Victoria Aveyard

i absolutely devoured this book. this book is very much giving hunger games x game of thrones energy. i really enjoyed all of the tropes deployed here. i don’t read a lot of “modern” fantasies, but i really enjoyed how tech was incorporated into the plot and the magic system.

i’m not gonna lie though, the names for the different abilities were really cheesy. there were also some things plot holes that i just didn’t understand. for instance: if the army was killing the “extras” or whatever we’re calling them, wouldn’t the king then be aware of them? like, how would he not know about these 27 executions that were very high profile? i also just found it really hard to believe that cal would betray his family and his country for mare given the way their romance hardly progressed. still moving right along to the next book though. the writing is good (can kinda tell it’s a debut though), the world building is intriguing and the plot has me in too deep at this point.
