Everything I Need I Get from You: How Fangirls Created the Internet as We Know It by Kaitlyn Tiffany

emotional funny reflective medium-paced

5.0

This is a beautiful essay collection for anyone who experienced the cultural chaos that is archived only on tumblr. 👑

Yes, 80% of this book turned out to be about One Direction. Why you should go find a copy:

a) THIS BOOK IS GORGEOUSLY WRITTEN. Her essays are fun, accessible, and well balanced! That’s not an easy trifecta to capture in non-fiction! When Kaitlyn writes about her small pilgrimage to a spot that Harry Styles puked one day, she makes it more captivating than it has any right to be. She even somehow made me nostalgic for her mom’s Bruce Springsteen obsession??? TALENT.

b) The dual perspective works well: she is simultaneously an insider, a fan whose life was shaped by 1D stan culture. But she also plays the skeptical modern historian willing to interrogate other fans. This creates a *****fascinating***** book that centres women on the internet and takes them seriously. 🥰

My favourite part: the chapter on the Larry conspiracy theorists….. 🫢🫢🫢🫢🫢🫢🫢 WOW. The baby stuff???? So much of our modern online world can be seen in the inner-fandom-conflict-and-chaos. 👀

(I will not say anything further to keep peace with the Larrys out there on the internet, somehow still going. )
