The Jungle
by Upton Sinclair
This classic has been on my TBR list for decades. I’m finally plowing my way through a good chuck of that stack. The jungle was kind of a surprise 5 star book for me. It’s depressing as all hell. A brutal and relentless fall of an immigrant man and his family in the early 20th century America. And there is no real rise before the fall. Just a steady decline.
Yet, the book is beautifully written. It’s prose, its metaphor, its heart and compassion. Sinclair makes you feel everything in all its grit and gore.
I honestly didn’t expect much from the book for whatever reason, but it was a nice surprise to find o throughly enjoyed it. Not sure it has completely converted me to socialism, but we can all agree capitalism at its worst is grotesque and heartless to say the least.
