A beautiful descriptive novel about the Mexican revolution. Azuela served with Villa and saw firsthand how brutal the revolution and the revolutionaries could be and how tragic the attempt to overthrow an unjust tyrannical government and replace it with a government that cared about the poor could be. In the end, the revolutionaries are fighting just to fight as Madero falls and Villa falls and the battle over who will govern seems more and more beside the point. I read a different translation -- the Signet Classic edition translated by E. Munguia, Jr.
