Naomi Novik is one of my favorite authors for strong smart heroines and complex whimsical worlds. I loved the main character El from the start, and loved her even more at the end. What a journey, what a world! It’s like Tim Burton, Suzanne Collins, and JK Rowling had a child together, and that child looked around at the world its parents had caused, and now had to cleverly find a way to survive and fix it all.
My one gripe would be that it is such a complex world, it has to be almost continuously described, which cuts into the action. But at least the narrator’s voice is wise and witty.
Looking forward to the next book.
