I’ve read this a few times in my life and it’s the first book I annotated and BOY is it cringe to read those first few high school annotations. I thought I was so goddamn smart. Teenagers don’t know anything and have the arrogance of a thousand short, bald, white American men. I’m glad I have grown but I haven’t read it since I was twenty.
I haven’t read this in 9 years so I’m 99% sure my ramblings about the tiny bits I remember are not spoilers but be warned I might ramble an element on accident. I remember this being one of the first multipov books I read. The drug element was interesting. I remember wanting to be at that huge festival so badly. Something about butterflies. I remember a girl with dirt on her making coffee and a guy washing dishes… pizza? Tunnels and Washington state. The tunnels freaked me out. Longing was something I remember feeling while reading this. Granted I was a 16 year old addict in high school so that could have just been angst but I do remember that chest tightening ache to find the person or be loved or accepted or needed or respected in the way you need the most. Fairies but like… different? Orange. Park bench. Map. Sleepwalking. Too many bodies.
I think this is going on my list to be reread before the end of the year.
