The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri

5.0

"Name--my beautiful boy. Cause of death--This broken world."

The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a fictionalized account of two refugees--Nuri, a beekeeper from Aleeppo, and his wife Afra, a painter, blinded by tragedy--as they embark on the Syrian refugee trail to Europe.

This is the second book I've read, in a short time, about Syrian refugees, the other one being Butterfly (review to come) is a nonfiction account, and each one gives similar glimpses into the faces behind the refugee crisis and the wars and homeland people are leaving. Lefteri does an excellent job of depicting the trauma that Nuri and Afra are leaving behind and the trauma and memories they will always carry with them in a delicate, yet impactful way. Her writing is lyrical and provoking. The story weaves together two timelines, going back and forth between the couple's time in Aleppo before and during the war, their arduous journey to Europe, and the present day trying to seek asylum and some semblance of peace.

I would definitely recommend this one!
