Initially, I picked this up because I thought it was a separate, original side-story, but that’s on me. This is a novelization of the first volume or so of The Summer Hikaru Died manga, with illustrations by the original mangaka. As a super fan of The Summer Hikaru Died, I quite enjoyed it. If for some reason you didn’t want to read the manga or watch the anime, or wanted to supplement those experiences (as I have), it’s a good offering. It gives some more insight and description than the manga, but for some this may come off as a bit on-the-nose compared to the manga. At time of writing this there’s only two episodes of the anime out so I don’t know if I can compare them, but I think you could probably skip the book or the manga in favor of the other if you wanted to.
Shout out to writer Mio Nukaga, who added excellent details and fun additional ideas a context to the prose. Ajani Oloye’s localization remains consistent to his work on the manga, which I’ve quite enjoyed.
I wouldn’t say this book is a must unless you really feel you need more of Yoshiki and Hikaru… which, well, if you’re me, you do.
